I'm liking this Mr. Pullman more and more.
I read The Golden Compass...liked it.
I saw the movie...loved it!
I read this on his website...
"Don't listen to any advice, that's what I'd say. Write only what you want to write. Please yourself. YOU are the genius, they're not. Especially don't listen to people (such as publishers) who think that you need to write what readers say they want. Readers don't always know what they want. I don't know what I want to read until I go into a bookshop and look around at the books other people have written, and the books I enjoy reading most are books I would never in a million years have thought of myself. So the only thing you need to do is forget about pleasing other people, and aim to please yourself alone. That way, you'll have a chance of writing something that other people WILL want to read, because it'll take them by surprise. It's also much more fun writing to please yourself."
...now I adore him!

Yeah, that's pretty cool.
I haven't read The Golden Compass yet, but I did see the movie with my kids. It was fantastic. Now we can't wait to read it.
After seeing the movie I'm anxious to read Book 2: The Subtle Knife. I might put it off though, because then the wait for the next movie will seem so long.
Is this the one they're making a big deal out of and boycotting because in the last book, they kill GOD?!!!
Hmmm...it almost makes me want to see it.
Because I haven't read the entire trilogy, I didn't know that's what happens. But I think it's not God per se that they kill, but organized religion that's killed. At least I hope that's what it is. Either way, it's definitely intriguing.
I adore him too
Read all 3 books years ago and read them again (with my 11 yr old) before the movie came out.
I don't know how I feel about the movie -of course they had to end it there... makes sense.
But I found the beginning kind of choppy - where was the camera attached to a daemon? I thought it might have been because I watched a dubbed version (sometimes they do that if they can't match the words to the mouth).
I saw the original version too...but we went to this really cool theatre with a crying room (for parents to take kids who cry) and there was no one there.... so my hubby and I took up residence in the crying room ... and .... umm... yeah I'll admit it - we were makin' out.
